MADD Long Island

Victim Services

Over the past 3 decades, MADD has been a leader in providing crime victim assistance related to drunk driving crashes. MADD continues to serve, support and advocate for more victims each year. We also empower victims and give them hope for the future. We help survivors survive. Last year MADD assisted over 55,000 victims of drunk driving crashes, a 10% increase over the prior year. This equates to, on average, assisting one new victim/survivor of drunk driving every 10 minutes. This is accomplished through a network of Victim Advocates, both volunteer and staff, trained and supported by MADD nationwide. On Long Island we are fortunate to have a number of volunteer victim advocates as well as a staff person to provide these services to local victim/survivors.

How does MADD help Victims?

MADD has trained volunteer and staff victim advocates who help victim/survivors survive. MADD is experienced in serving bereaved and injured drunk driving victims and survivors with over 1,200 trained Victim Advocates nationwide.

MADD Long Island Victim Advocates can be there for you in your grief and assist in helping victims understand and cope with the legal processes and other complications they will face. They also provide a wide array of informational pamphlets in both English and Spanish to assist victims and their families.

All victims/survivors, families and friends are welcome.

Annual Candlelight Vigil

MADD Long Island conducts an Annual Candlelight Vigil on the first Sunday of December. This memorial is for all victim/survivors and their family and friends. This moving, participatory service is held on the Farmingdale State College campus and is followed by a visit to the MADD Garden of Awareness, where loved ones can be memorialized on bricks in the garden wall. There are about 300 victims names inscribed on the wall to date. For information please call the MADD Long Island office at (631) 547-6233 or email: LongIsland.NY@madd.org.

Assist Law Enforcement

MADD Volunteer victims give of themselves in many ways not the least of which is through participating in Victim Impact Panels (VIP). At these seminars which are attended by convicted DWI Offenders, MADD volunteer victims tell the story of their loss and how a drunk driver changed their life forever in the hope of discouraging these offenders from ever driving drunk again.

Volunteer Victim Advocates also attend Police Sobriety Check points, speak at schools, and do other work in support of MADD's mission.
